Starting in Otley Town Centre this route takes in the Chevin and provides views across not only Otley but the surrounding areas of Guiseley, Yeadon and Leeds. It's not your normal trek to Surprise View but takes in some of the lesser known Otley paths.
There is ample parking in Otley and the location of the free car park is linked below.
The walk starts at the Buttercross in the centre of Otley, from here head south towards All Saints Church and up the picturesque Station Road (with its cobbled roads and victorian houses). At the top of Station Road carry on over the bypass and you will start your ascent of the Chevin.
Halfway up (just before the iconic White House) bear right onto Johnny Lane for a short climb. At the end of Johnny Lane you have the option of turning right to Sinclairs field for a short detour to some stunning views of Otley or carry on left to the White House itself (which also enjoys views across Otley. The White House also has a cafe and toilet facilities).
From the Whitehouse follow the eastward path to the top of the Chevin (avoiding the steep stair climb to Surprise View), this path is easier on the legs and brings you out on York Gate where you will pick up Mall Lane leading to Carlton Lane.
At Carlton Lane you will start to see views to the surrounding towns of Yeadon and Guiseley. Turning right it is a short road walk to the junction with Cross Lane where you head back towards the Chevin and York Gate. It is here where you are greeted with some lovely views of Ilkley Moor and beyond.
Not far from the junction of Moor Top and West Chevin Road is the public footpath across to Menston and Gill Beck. Follow this path which brings you out at Otley Golf Course which has several well signed routes across its grounds. From the Golf Course you now head back into Otley via the Otley Mill complex and some lovely riverside views.
Otley itself has many great pubs offering good ales and food. There is also an abundance of independent cafes catering to all tastes (from greasy spoon to vegan).
A great walk of all abilities and a change from the usual Chevin surprise view walk.
