Otley Dry Stone Maze (2 Miles)

One of Otley's best kept secrets is the brilliant dry-stone maze in the Chevin Country Park. Built by the Members of the Otley and Yorkshire Dales Branch of the Dry Stone Walling Association the maze is located 300m to the west of the White House at the end of Johnny Lane.

This short circular walk starts and ends at the Buttercross and is suitable for all ages and abilities.

From the Buttercross head south up Kirkgate to Station road.  At the end of Station Road cross the  pedestrian bridge to start your ascent of the Chevin.  After crossing Birdcage walk and a short climb you arrive at Johnny Lane.

Follow Johnny Lane to the end and you will soon find the drystone Maze.  The Maze took 18 months to complete and used 150 tonnes of recycled sandstone.

Once you have explored the Maze and are ready to move on.  Follow the path towards the White House where you can stop for a coffee or comfort stop at the Cafe.  You can also get some great views across Otley.

From the White House follow the main path down the Chevin and rejoin Johnny Lane where you follow the path to Birdgage Walk, East Chevin Road and eventually the path back to the Buttercross via Gay Lane and Bondgate.

  2. Hi Vanessa

Yes but you would have to access it via Birdcage Walk and Johnny Lane and return that way also. Johnny Lane is also on an incline but wide and tarmac.

    Hope this helps.
